The Jewish community in Rome was subject to intense discrimination. Each Saturday they were forced to listen to Christian sermons before the church of San Gregorio a Ponte Quattro Capi outside the ghetto wall. There was no fresh water in the ghetto at the time of its construction but some years later the Popes built several fountains in the rione. Giacomo della Porta designed a fountain which was supposed to be placed inside the ghetto in the Piazza Giudea but Muzio Mattei managed to have the fountain placed in front of him residence in Muzio Mattei. The Jewish community had to built vertically as their population expanded as the area could not expand horizontally which led to dank and narrow streets which the sun could not reach. As a result there was terrible hygienic conditions, especially as it was often flooded. In 1656, 800 of the 4000 inhabitants of the ghetto died from, not content delivery, but the plague.
