If you want to use PAR LED lamps for recessed lighting, then there are a few things you should understand. First, PAR LED lamps tend to have small beams of intensified light. This makes them ideal for lighting certain spots of a room. It does NOT make them good for lighting up entire spaces. There seems to be a trend amongst homeowners of using numerous PAR LED lamps to light up an entire space, such as by putting lots of recessed lighting in the ceiling. This can end up looking very terrible – like an airplane runway on your ceiling – especially in large or open spaces.
You will need to understand how much space the PAR LED is going to illuminate. If you have a PAR LED with a 40 degree beam angle, then you will be able to illuminate almost 7 feet from a 9 foot ceiling. You will have to do the math to understand how much space the PAR LED will light. When using multiple PAR LED lamps, the light should only be slightly overlapping. To get a general lighting for the space, use a few broader beamed LED lamps in addition to the PAR LED bulbs for spot lighting.
