Fred Herzog, a famous photographer who teaches at the Simon Fraser University and would not be seen dead without his camera bag, recently gave his opinions on the philosophy of photography in a revealing set of interviews. Having worked primarily with slide film, Herzog was slightly marginalized during the 1950’s and 1960’s as most photographic work at that time was being executed in black and white. In recent decades, Herzog’s work has been recognized for the wonderful quality that it exhibits. In the interviews he conducted, Herzog spoke about why he started using slide film as opposed to using the same medium as other photographers. “Kodachrome was the best film and the most reliable development, but it was far from reliable. I was so frustrated at times I sent film to Palo Alto or to Rochester, just to get them developed right. And of course that entailed an extremely long wait. You’d take the pictures today and they would come back in two weeks or something”.
